The Origins of Arc Play
Three factors led to the arc play revolution of poker in the mid-2000s: the online poker boom, tracking software, and game theory.

Spark Betting Fundamentals
Developed out of the arc play framework, spark betting is a type of non-linear play that paints broad strokes rather than fine lines over the small-ball range of a hand’s play pattern.
From my experience, this creates small pricing inefficiencies that reward smallish sizing (15-30% of pot) at critical points in the hand with greater success. With these bets, I create opportunities for exploitation on later streets.
Spark betting is about frequency, not size. Against traditional continuation betters, I will use my spark bets 65-75% of the time when checked to me in position.

Building Monster Pots
I use pot manipulation to get stacks in while having the stronger hand. I begin by determining the best stack depths and then target players who have both the ability and proclivity to call big bets.
Building monster pots relies on bet sizing on earlier streets so that bigger bets are set up for later streets.
I employ tactics like:
- Overbetting when board textures favor my range.
- Blending in well-timed min-raises to induce action on a particular board.
- Injecting wider bet sizing at different moments to extract protection and value.
- Double or triple barreling when I think my opponent will call with a weak hand.
A huge part of my pot-building strategy involves position. Late position allows me to dictate action more easily and control pot size with well-timed open raises and re-raises.
I’ll tend to use smaller bets on the flop to incentivize drawing hands to stay in with me, and then ramp up sizing on turns and rivers where I have a huge equity advantage.
I am always evaluating stack-to-pot ratios (SPR) when building these pots because I want to extract maximum value on the river and commit all-in with very strong holdings.
Psychology Behind Curved Bets
Due to the predictability of most poker players’ reactions to curved bet patterns, these sizing variations can be an overpowering psychological weapon.
I have noticed that opponents interpret bet sizes that gradually increase as strength and decreasing sizes as weakness, regardless of my actual holdings.
When I shape my bets upward (from small sizes to larger sizes across the streets), I create belly-up pressure that forces difficult choices.
Players struggle to adapt their ranges to unusual sizing patterns and frequently make exploitable mistakes.
For example:
- 33% pot → then 85% pot tends to lead to more calls than 65% all-around.
Downward curves can be equally powerful.
- I will often open with a large bet and then shrink sizing on later streets to induce bluff catches.
- This exploits opponents’ tendency to see shrinking bet sizes as weakness.
- If I’m dropping down from 75% to 40% pot, players call more often with marginal hands, letting me extract thin value or make successful bluffs.
The key is maintaining balanced ranges where upward and downward curves aren’t predictable.

The Art of Stack-to-Pot Manipulation
Curved bet patterns induce psychological pressure, but SPR manipulation actively forces opponents into mathematically terrible situations.
